Project Name: “La Gruta” (Spanish for ‘The Cave’)
Purpose: Creative space for music composition.
Media: Mixed media mural.
The work began in the summer of 2019, when the world was a very different place. Juscheld had been years composing the oratorio Apocalypsis Iesu and he wanted something very special for his new studio. He asked me if I could paint the walls of the room with motifs taken freely from the Book of Revelation.
North wall: it is presided by the “Roque Nublo” (‘Cloudy Boulders’, a landmark of Gran Canaria), that appears between the clouds, which are the dragon’s breath coming from the west (left side of the picture). To the right the well known horses of chapter 6 of the book split from the “train of time and places” (developing), that transforms into the wave of blood and lava, coming out of the tunnel under the volcano mountain. The fourth ‘ghostly’ horse (his hair the snow) is the mountain itself. It points to Ursa Major, the big bear constellation which appears twice in the mural, its original position in summer 2019, when the work was started, and then winter 2020, when the work reached its present form.
West wall: it pictures the vision of the woman crowned by stars, and the sun and moon under her feet (Rev. 12:1). Her face we all know, her left side develops into an eagle wing (the eagle is John of Patmos symbol, the author of Revelation). Her right side develops into the lion paw of the Sphinx in Gizeh. Egypt is a powerful symbol in the Bible, meaning bondage and slavery. The paw, or claw, melts into the setting sun, or maybe the dawn. Which shines into a “collage of cities”.
Ceiling (around the lamp: it says (in Latin), “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him”, the beginning of the Book of Revelation.
